Your rights under CROA and FCRA.
Plainly stated.
Score Pros is a credit and financial consulting company. CROA and FCRA still set real rules for what we can promise and how we bill. This page explains exactly what that means for you, what we're required to do, and what you can always do for free without us.
Your rights under CROA
CROA, cited at 15 U.S.C. § 1679 et seq., is the federal law that protects you any time a company, including Score Pros, offers to improve your credit report or credit standing for a fee. It exists because this industry has a long history of taking money and delivering nothing. Where the Credit Repair Organizations Act or the California Credit Services Act applies to a service, Score Pros complies with it, including written agreements, required disclosures, and your right to cancel. CROA gives you these specific, non-negotiable protections:
- A written contract before any work begins. The contract must describe the services, the total cost, and the estimated timeframe for completion.
- A written right to cancel. Under CROA you may cancel your contract in writing within three business days of signing it, for any reason and at no cost. Some states give you longer. California residents may cancel until midnight of the fifth working day after signing, and any payment made must be returned within 15 days of our receiving your notice. Your written agreement states the cancellation period that applies in your state.
- No advance fees. A company subject to CROA cannot charge or collect payment for services until those services have actually been performed.
- No false or misleading claims. A company cannot make untrue statements about your credit history, its services, or the likely results.
- Your right to dispute yourself, for free. Nothing in CROA, or in any contract with us, takes away your right to contact the credit bureaus directly and dispute items on your own at no cost.
If a company asks you to pay before doing any work, that's not a policy difference. It's a violation of federal law.
Your dispute rights under FCRA Section 611
The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives every consumer the right to dispute information on their credit report that they believe is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable. Under FCRA Section 611:
- A credit bureau must investigate a disputed item, generally within 30 days of receiving your dispute.
- That window extends to 45 days if you submit additional supporting information during the initial 30-day period.
- The bureau must forward your dispute to the furnisher (the company that reported the item), who must also investigate.
- If the item cannot be verified as accurate and complete within that window, the bureau must delete or correct it.
- If an item is verified as accurate, it can remain on your report for its allowed reporting period, typically seven years for most negative items, longer for some bankruptcies.
This is the actual legal mechanism behind every dispute you send using the record we help you prepare. It's not asking bureaus for favors. It's requiring them to either prove what they're reporting or correct it, which is exactly what federal law requires.
What Score Pros does to comply
Compliance isn't a page we publish once and forget. It's how we operate day to day:
What we do
- Provide a written contract before any work begins
- Disclose your CROA rights in writing, including the cancellation window that applies in your state
- Follow the CROA rule that prohibits charging for credit consulting services before they are performed
- Prepare your dispute letters for items that are inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable, for you to review and send yourself
- Track every round and every bureau deadline on your file
What we don't do
- Remove accurate, verifiable reporting
- Guarantee a specific score increase or removal timeline
- Charge you before performing the work
- Create a new credit identity or file using a different identifying number
- Sell tradelines or lock you into a long-term contract
Results vary based on what's actually in your file and how bureaus and furnishers respond. No outcome or timeline is guaranteed, and we'll tell you that directly rather than let a sales conversation imply otherwise.
The same posture applies to business credit work. When we prepare a business file for lender review, we describe it as improving fundability and position, not as a guaranteed funding amount. Whether a lender approves an application, and for how much, is always the lender's decision, not ours.
Red flags of an illegal credit scam
Part of publishing this page is making sure you can spot a bad actor, whether that's us or someone else. Be cautious of any company that:
- Asks for payment in full before doing any work on your file
- Tells you to dispute accurate information as if it were an error, sometimes called "piggybacking" or "spamming" the bureaus
- Offers to build you a new credit identity using a CPN (credit privacy number) or a different identifying number in place of your Social Security number
- Guarantees a specific score number or a specific removal date in writing or over the phone
- Pressures you to sign a contract same-day without giving you time to read it or exercise the cancellation right stated in your agreement
A CPN scheme in particular is a federal crime: using a number other than your own Social Security number to apply for credit is a form of fraud, and no legitimate company will offer or suggest it. If someone offers you one, walk away and consider reporting it to the FTC.

What you can do for free, without us
You never need to pay anyone to exercise these rights:
- Pull your full credit reports from all three bureaus, free, weekly, at annualcreditreport.com
- Dispute inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable items directly with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion at no cost
- Dispute directly with the furnisher (the original creditor or collection agency) in addition to the bureau
- Request debt validation from a collector before paying anything they claim you owe
- Opt out of prescreened credit and insurance offers at optoutprescreen.com
If you'd rather learn the process with structure behind you instead of starting from a blank page, Approval Lab and ScorePros AI are both built for exactly that. If you'd rather have us prepare the letters and walk the correspondence with you round by round, that's what our hands-on consulting service is for.
How to file a complaint
If you believe any company you've worked with on your credit, including us, has violated your rights, you can file a complaint directly with federal and state regulators at no cost:
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB): consumerfinance.gov/complaint — the federal agency that enforces CROA and FCRA
- Your state Attorney General's office: most states maintain a consumer protection division that accepts these complaints directly
- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC): reportfraud.ftc.gov for deceptive or unfair practices
We'd rather you call us first at (949) 430-6622 or email info@getscorepros.com so we can address it directly. But that's your choice, and this right doesn't depend on trying us first.
